11th Grade United States History

Second Quarter homework assignment

Due date: 15 December

A Road to Correction

The United States of America was founded on Christian principles and by great leaders, most of whom were Christian themselves. The United States was to be a land of opportunity, a land which people could move to, live in freedom, worship as they wished and prosper without fear of retribution. But below the surface of ‘the land of opportunity’ were social issues that threatened to boil over, and sometimes did.

Not everyone had opportunity, not everyone was free. Not everyone enjoyed the riches and wealth that the United States promised.

Your assignment is to choose one ‘liberty’ that was not offered to all and research it. Some of the topics you might want to choose from are:

-          Treatment of the Indians

-          Slavery

-          Child labor

-          Working hours

-          Minimum wage

-          Women suffrage

-          Subtle ways in which society shifted from progressivism to big business

You are to design a newspaper editorial page that includes the following:

A five hundred word editorial that states  - your issue

                                                            - your position

                                                            - at least four points explaining why you hold this position

You also need to include the following:

- An authentic political cartoon about your issue

- An advertisement selling something from that era (you must make this up)

- An “advertisement” telling of a protest rally, prayer meeting, petition etc for or against your issue (ensure you include when, where, what etc…make this up too)

- Two “letters to the editor” (one for and one against your issue). The one taking the same side of the issue as you can have one of the same points of view (100 words each)

Other things of your discretion should be added to your page to fill in the gaps. There is no set style or layout that you have to adhere to. You can make it as big as you wish (up to newspaper size) or as small (no small than a piece of copy paper).

This assignment needs be typed.
